The next time our car breaks down we may not need to take it to the garage and spend a fortune. The online book "How to repair your car" by the Rice University engineering professor John R. Hunter, is available for download-free. The book is available as a PDF file, and includes detailed information about how to diagnose and fix fuel injection problems; how to replace parts including cables, belts and timing belts; as well as how to replace spark plugs, tune-ups and other fixes that can save you from needless trips into town or the shop. There are also tips on how much it might cost for any given job. Users can download the instructions in any one of three ways: by e-mail, by RSS feeds and by a direct link to an FTP site. The book and instructions can be downloaded in any one of three languages: English, Spanish and Chinese. The book is sponsored by the University's David G. Evans Center for Automotive Engineering, which is supported in part by the National Science Foundation-funded DAViD project. The DAViD project includes a number of research studies that focus on reducing auto shop costs and improving the quality of service that rural drivers receive. The project is primarily funded by the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and the National Science Foundation, with support from Toyota Motor Sales of America, Inc.
